In 2020, our company Belize Sugar Industries, Ltd. (BSI) partnered with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center (CCCCC) and other industry stakeholders to design a project to build climate resilience in the northern Belize sugar industry. The project was approved this spring by the Board of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which is funding the project through a grant of US$25,000,000. 

We were pleased to join PortsToronto and our community in welcoming the Port’s first ship of the season to our Redpath® Sugar Toronto Refinery, which celebrates its 65th year on the Toronto waterfront this year! 

This Easter, we were pleased to participate in an initiative to bring Easter eggs and holiday cheer to children in East London. Our employees also raised funds for a charity partner committed to alleviating food poverty in our community.

From neighborhood cleanups and tree plantings to clothing drives and more, we’re proud that our employees join us in supporting our communities throughout the year. The C&H® Sugar Crockett Refinery is showing its hometown pride through a series of sugar packets that celebrate our Crockett, California community. Our employees delivered free cases of the sugar packets to restaurants, coffee shops and organizations in town.

Employees at ASR Group’s Domino® Sugar Yonkers Refinery carried out their first annual food drive to support Feeding Westchester, a non-profit on which more than 220,000 individuals in Westchester County, New York rely for their next meal.

ASR Group Research & Technology Operations Technical Manager Clara Aymerich, based at our Thames Refinery in London, recently earned her MBA with distinction through our company Tate & Lyle Sugars’ apprenticeship program.

In anticipation of the Major League Baseball playoffs, ASR Group's Domino® Sugar Baltimore Refinery is supporting the Baltimore Orioles, known locally as the "O's," by lighting only the border and each set of “O” and “S” on the iconic “Domino Sugars” sign. In Belize, our community outreach, education and empowerment programs are providing opportunities for women farmers, who now make up 41% of the total cane farmers of the northern sugar industry. (BSI) Cane Farmer Relations Department, is the Women Cane Farmers Field School (WFFS), which recently graduated its first class of participants from local cane farmer associations.

BELLE GLADE, Fla. (June 13, 2023) Tellus Products, LLC announces that all its sustainable plant fiber tableware products are now certified by BPI, confirming that the products contain no added PFAS.

The certification means all Tellus® plant fiber products meet the rigorous third-party standards set by BPI, the leading third-party verifier of ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards for compostable products in North America.

We are delighted that our company Tate & Lyle Sugars received a grant from the UK Government’s Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF) for a project to explore new technologies that could help our Thames Refinery in London decarbonize.

ASR Group’s Research & Technology team based at our Thames Refinery in London recently collaborated with the University of East London (UEL) and Grimshaw Architects on an exciting project to produce a sustainable construction material using sugarcane fiber. The prototype floor-slab, called Sugarcrete™, has the potential to provide a low-carbon alternative to concrete, thanks in large part to the properties of sugarcane that make it one of the world’s most efficient and sustainable crops.

Rich Baker, Vice President of Engineering, was recognized by the Sugar Journal as a 2023 ‘Sugar Notable’ in the Raw Sugar Refiner category. Rich, who has been with our company for more than 40 years, is widely respected for his experience and expertise in all parts of our business, as well as his mentorship of generations of engineers.

Each April, we celebrate Earth Day by joining hands with our neighbors to make our communities greener, cleaner and more sustainable through neighborhood cleanups, electronic waste recycling drives, environmental education efforts and other sustainability initiatives. This year, hundreds of employees around the globe volunteered their time to support these activities.

Tate & Lyle Sugars is moving the bottles from its highly successful Tate & Lyle Coffee Syrups range from virgin PET to Recycled PET (rPET) plastic bottles as part of its ongoing packaging sustainability commitment.
 

Research from the UK Brain Music Research Project has identified the sound of some of the nation’s favourite breakfast toppings – measuring brain activity when eating syrup, marmalade and butter – and turned them into music.
 
The project was commissioned by Lyle’s Golden Syrup to help describe the 140-year-old product’s ‘indescribable’ taste. Previous consumer research found consumers couldn’t quite put a finger on its unique flavour, with descriptions ranging from ‘buttery’ to ‘caramel’.

Colleagues at our corporate headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida donated clothing and accessories to support Dress for Success Palm Beaches (DFSPB), a non-profit that provides both professional attire and personal development opportunities to women in the Palm Beach County area to help them gain financial independence and thrive in both work and life. 

As part of our sustainability program and outreach efforts, our colleagues in Belize recently launched a Youth Advisory Board to improve engagement with the newest generation of employees at Belize Sugar Industries (BSI) through projects and initiatives ranging from education and leadership development to team and community building activities.

Jeremy Baham, Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor at the ASR Group Baltimore Refinery, is a strong believer in the company’s Vision & Strategy. In all that he does, he takes into account our four strategic pillars: Service Excellence, Value-Add, Efficiency & Sustainability and our foundational pillar, Talent & Culture. Since joining ASR in 2019, Jeremy has helped strengthen Talent & Culture in the Baltimore Refinery Machine shop and beyond through initiatives that foster teamwork and build on pride in our business and our Domino® Sugar brand.

As ASR Group continues to make strides in reducing our global carbon footprint, we installed 23 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at our Thames Refinery and Plaistow Plant in London and at our Lisbon Refinery. In addition to advancing our sustainability efforts, the charging stations support our employees’ use of EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

Charlottesville, VA (January 30, 2023) - ASR Group and Bonumose, Inc. are pleased to announce that tagatose production has commenced at Bonumose’s new commercial production facility and advanced research & development lab. Having developed a proprietary method for producing low-cost tagatose from plant-based starches, Bonumose is at the forefront of using enzymatic processes to make rare sugars at scale. Starting in mid-February, ASR Group will have tagatose available for initial shipments and samples.

ASR Group’s Belleville Plant helped brighten the holidays for our neighbors in need. The Belleville Plant’s Sustainability Committee held a food drive for Gleaners Food Bank, collecting more than 300 pounds of donated nonperishable food items to help local families facing food insecurity, as well as a clothing drive as part of the Quinte West Adopt-a-Child program held each holiday season.

The leadership team at ASR Group’s Cleveland Plant recently volunteered their time to support the Cleveland City Mission, an organization that helps provide food, shelter and services for those in need. 

ASR Group was happy to make the holidays a bit brighter for families near our C&H® Sugar Crockett Refinery in California through a monetary donation to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. Refinery Manager Hitesh Modgil presented the Food Bank with our check for $20,000, continuing our longtime support for the organization that helps feed more than 275,000 people per month.

NEW YORK, Aug 3 (Reuters) - ASR Group, the world's largest sugar refiner, has agreed to a 10-year deal to buy millions of tonnes of non-genetically modified (GMO-free) raw cane sugar from Brazil's Raizen, according to both companies.

This is the world's first large-scale deal for GMO-free raw sugar and it comes as several sugar producers in Brazil are starting planting of genetically modified (GMO) sugarcane varieties, seeking to reduce production costs.

Raízen, the world's largest sugar exporting company, and ASR Group, the world's largest refiner and marketer of cane sugar, announce a partnership that sets the standard for sustainable raw cane sugar supply chains globally. The unprecedented multi-year agreement between the partners creates the world's first fully physically traceable and 100 percent non-genetically modified (non-GM) certified supply chain. The partnership stretches from Raízen's sustainably certified sugarcane farms and bioenergy parks in Center-South Brazil, all the way to supporting the well-loved brands that make up ASR Group's cane sugar consumer products in North America and Europe.

As the war in Ukraine continues to result in food shortages throughout the country, ASR Group’s collaborative crisis relief efforts in the U.K. are helping provide Ukrainian families with our Tate & Lyle® Sugar.

Before the Port of Big Creek (PBC) was dredged to 11 meters depth in March 2019, the “tug and barge” cargo transport system—utilized for decades by the northern sugar industry—was one of the industry bottlenecks. The channel and nearshore dredging at PBC, however, created Belize’s first deep water port and also an opportunity for Belize Sugar Industries Ltd. (BSI) to materially improve its raw sugar and molasses logistics operation. BSI strategically conducted trials of sugar and molasses shipments through PBC in 2019 and determined that using PBC was more economical but required a significant investment for BSI to build its own assets at the port and change the mode of transportation.

As the Domino Sugar refinery in Baltimore officially crossed the century mark last month, two of the biggest construction projects the plant has ever undertaken are taking shape.

American Sugar Refining, Inc., a member of ASR Group, is celebrating the first raw sugar delivery of its newly constructed, state-of-the-art barge, Knot Refined, to its Domino® Sugar Yonkers Refinery. On Thursday, the barge delivered 18,000 tons of raw sugar grown and milled in South Florida by ASR’s parent companies – Florida Crystals Corporation and Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida – to the plant, which has been operating on the Hudson River for more than 120 years.

ASR Group is delighted to support local youth at John Swett High School, just up the street from our Crockett Refinery in California, by starting a new scholarship program for students interested in pursuing careers in manufacturing. Our $15,000 donation will help 10 students in the school’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) Careers Academy on their path to a certificate or degree from a local community college trade program.

Bonumose, Inc. announces the achievement of regulatory and food application milestones in the United States and Canada for the low-glycemic, rare sugar tagatose, as the company progresses on time and on schedule for the opening of its first commercial production facility in Spring 2022.

Belize has long been a haven for divers and is ranked among the top dive destinations in the world. The country’s current mega dive attractions include the 185-mile-long barrier reef, second longest in the world, and the Great Blue Hole, a 125-meter deep sinkhole made famous by Jacques Cousteau. Belize Sugar Industries (BSI), a part of ASR Group, donated “The Wit,” a decommissioned concrete ship used for decades as an offshore, floating storage facility for molasses, to reinforce the country’s position as a leading destination for diving aficionados. 

An aspect of our business that we cherish is our ability to collaborate with organizations to help make people’s lives better. One particularly gratifying partnership ASR Group recently embarked on is with an amazing nonprofit called Edesia Nutrition that makes fortified ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) that are saving the lives of severely malnourished children throughout developing countries.

We are pleased to announce that Ben Sadler, our Real Estate Counsel, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, marking another step for Ben in his dedication to public service and volunteerism.

The United States Department of Defense has honored a member of ASR Group's Information Technology department for her support of one of our employees during his deployment with the U.S. Army Reserve this year.

As the waterfront refinery replaced its giant, neon rooftop sign — its highest-profile asset and a staple on the Inner Harbor skyline — a roaring, three-alarm fire burned down the cavernous raw sugar shed on the property in April, forcing the company to halt the plant’s operations for more than a week.
