On August 29, Hurricane Ida came ashore in Louisiana less than 60 miles south of our Chalmette Refinery as an incredibly strong Category 4 storm. The high winds caused widespread damage and left much of the New Orleans-area without power. Working in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, a non-profit headquartered in New Orleans that provides food distribution programs, community kitchen meal service, nutrition education and public benefits assistance, ASR Group lent a hand to our neighbors.
We were pleased to send a trailer load of water to Second Harvest for distribution, along with enough rice to feed more than 7,000 families, from our parent company Florida Crystals’ Sem-Chi Rice Mill in Florida. In addition to our ongoing support to Second Harvest, we also donated $10,000 to the organization specifically to assist our neighbors in Southeast Louisiana during this time of recovery.
“Each year, we support the good work Second Harvest does throughout southern Louisiana,” said Peter O’Malley, Vice President for Corporate Relations. “During times like these, they are particularly well equipped to help those most in need. We are happy to partner with them to help our neighbors.”
“ASR Group is such a wonderful community partner, and we are truly grateful for your continued support,” said Amelia Whittington of Second Harvest. “This donation will have a huge impact on our community as we work to provide our neighbors with the help they need in the wake of the hurricane.”
We were also happy to donate funds to support the St. Bernard Parish’s efforts to distribute relief supplies, serve hot meals and provide assistance to residents in our Southeast Louisiana community.
