As a proud supplier to Royal Households, it was particularly important for our company, Tate and Lyle Sugars, to mark this milestone, and we are delighted to share the release of a limited-edition Lyle’s® Golden Syrup tin to commemorate the occasion! “As a holder of the Royal Warrant for more than 100 years, Lyle’s is pleased to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee with a limited edition tin of our much loved Lyle’s® Golden Syrup,” said Claire Crill, Tate & Lyle Sugars’ Head of Corporate Affairs. The Royal Warrant of Appointment is a mark of recognition granted to companies who supply goods to HM The Queen, giving the holder the right to display the Royal Arms in relation to its business. “We are dedicating the tin to the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) by donating £25,000 to help them support talented craftspeople with education and training,” said Crill. “Abram Lyle was a great Victorian maker. We think he’d be proud that his famous product is supporting talented craftspeople develop.” Lyle’s® Golden Syrup dates back to 1881, when Abram Lyle built a sugar refinery on the Thames in East London. As part of the cane sugar refining process, he produced a rich golden and smooth treacly syrup. Calling it “Goldie,” Lyle started selling it from wooden casks, soon supplying a ton a week to grocers across London. The famous green and gold tin that we know today was soon born to help meet the high demand. Today, more than a million tins leave our Plaistow Plant each month, destined for grocery stores not only in the United Kingdom but around the globe. In 2007, Guinness World Records confirmed the classic Lyle’s Golden Syrup tin as the world’s oldest unchanged brand packaging.
